How are marks, negative marking, and passing percentage calculated?

Learn how marks, score percentage, negative marking, correct answers, wrong answers, and passing percentage work in quizzes.

Quiz Pathshala calculates quiz results based on quiz settings such as marks per question, correct answers, wrong answers, negative marking, and passing percentage.

The exact calculation may depend on the quiz type and settings selected by Quiz Pathshala or the educator who created the quiz.

What is marks per question?

Marks per question means how many marks are given for each correct answer.

For example, if marks per question is 1, each correct answer gives 1 mark.

If marks per question is 2, each correct answer gives 2 marks.

What if marks per question is blank?

If marks per question is blank, the quiz may use 1 mark per question by default.

This means each correct answer may be counted as 1 mark.

How correct answers are counted

When you select the correct option, marks are added based on the quiz settings.

For example:

  • Marks per question: 1

  • Correct answers: 10

  • Marks obtained: 10

If marks per question is 2:

  • Correct answers: 10

  • Marks obtained: 20

What is negative marking?

Negative marking means marks may be deducted for wrong answers.

Negative marking is optional and depends on quiz settings.

If negative marking is enabled, wrong answers may reduce your final score.

If negative marking is not enabled, wrong answers may not deduct marks.

What if negative marking is blank?

If negative marking is blank or disabled, negative marking may not apply.

In that case, wrong answers may not reduce your marks.

Example with negative marking

Suppose:

  • Marks per question: 1

  • Negative marking: 0.25

  • Correct answers: 10

  • Wrong answers: 4

Then:

  • Marks from correct answers: 10

  • Marks deducted for wrong answers: 1

  • Final marks: 9

This is only an example. Actual calculation depends on quiz settings.

What about skipped questions?

Skipped or unanswered questions usually do not get marks.

In most cases, skipped questions also do not receive negative marking, unless the quiz rules say otherwise.

What is total marks?

Total marks means the maximum marks available in the quiz.

There is no separate Total Marks field in the quiz form.

Total marks are calculated automatically based on:

  • Marks per question

  • Number of questions in the quiz

For example:

  • Total questions: 20

  • Marks per question: 1

  • Total marks: 20

If marks per question is 2:

  • Total questions: 20

  • Marks per question: 2

  • Total marks: 40

What is score percentage?

Score percentage shows your performance in percentage form.

It is usually calculated using obtained marks and total marks.

For example:

  • Obtained marks: 15

  • Total marks: 20

  • Score percentage: 75%

What is passing percentage?

Passing percentage means the minimum score percentage required to pass the quiz.

For example, if passing percentage is 40%, you need at least 40% score to pass.

If your score is lower than the passing percentage, your result may show as failed.

Example of pass/fail calculation

Suppose:

  • Total marks: 20

  • Obtained marks: 12

  • Score percentage: 60%

  • Passing percentage: 40%

Result: Pass

If obtained marks are 6 out of 20:

  • Score percentage: 30%

  • Passing percentage: 40%

Result: Fail

Does every quiz have passing percentage?

Yes. Passing percentage is required while creating or editing a quiz.

Passing percentage is used to decide whether the learner has passed or failed the quiz.

For example, if passing percentage is 40%, the learner needs at least 40% score to pass.

If the learner’s score is lower than the passing percentage, the result may show as failed.

Important note

Marks, negative marking, and passing percentage depend on quiz settings.

If marks per question is blank, 1 mark per question may be used by default.

There is no separate Total Marks field. Total marks are calculated automatically based on marks per question and the number of questions in the quiz.

Passing percentage is required while creating or editing a quiz and is used to decide pass or fail status.

If negative marking is blank or disabled, wrong answers may not reduce marks.

Standard Quiz and Live Quiz attempts are saved after successful submission, while Practice Quiz results are usually shown on screen but not saved as regular attempt records.
