How to import questions using Excel on Quiz Pathshala?

Learn the correct Excel format, answer format, import process, and common mistakes to avoid while importing questions.

Teachers can import questions using an Excel file on Quiz Pathshala.

Excel import is useful when you want to add many questions quickly instead of creating each question manually.

Where can teachers import questions?

Teachers can import questions in two main places.

Import questions into a quiz

You can import questions directly into your own quiz.

This is useful when you have already created a quiz and want to add many questions to that quiz.

Import questions into My Question Bank

You can also import questions into My Question Bank.

My Question Bank is your private question bank.

After importing questions into My Question Bank, you can select those questions and import them into any of your own quizzes later.

Can teachers import questions into Global Bank?

No. Teachers cannot import questions into Global Bank.

Global Bank is managed by the Quiz Pathshala team.

Teachers can only select questions from Global Bank and import them directly into their own quizzes.

Teachers cannot add, edit, or upload questions into Global Bank.

Excel import supports standard text-based questions

Excel import is mainly for standard text-based questions and options.

Do not include images, links, code snippets, HTML, scripts, or unsupported formatting in the Excel file.

Only plain text should be used in questions and options.

You cannot add image-only options, text and image options, or code snippet options through Excel import.

If your question requires images, text with images, or code snippets in options, add that question manually using the manual question form.

Required Excel format

Your Excel file should follow the required column format.

Use these columns exactly:

  • Question

  • Option1

  • Option2

  • Option3

  • Option4

  • Correct Answer

  • Explanation

Do not use different column names like Option A, Option B, Option C, or Option D.

Use Option1, Option2, Option3, and Option4 exactly.

There should be no space between the word Option and the number.

Correct format:

  • Option1

  • Option2

  • Option3

  • Option4

Wrong format:

  • Option 1

  • Option A

  • Option B

  • Option C

  • Option D

What should each column contain?

Each column has a specific purpose.

Question

Add the main question text in this column.

Write the question clearly.

Option1

Add the first answer option.

Option2

Add the second answer option.

Option3

Add the third answer option.

Option4

Add the fourth answer option.

Correct Answer

Add the correct answer number in this column.

The correct answer should be written as a numeric option value.

For example:

  • Use 1 if Option1 is correct

  • Use 2 if Option2 is correct

  • Use 3 if Option3 is correct

  • Use 4 if Option4 is correct

Explanation

Explanation is optional.

You can add a clear explanation for the correct answer.

If you do not want to provide an explanation, you can leave this column blank.

Explanation helps learners understand why the answer is correct.

Correct Answer format

Correct Answer should contain only the option number.

Single correct answer

For a single correct answer, use one number.

Examples:

  • 1

  • 2

  • 3

  • 4

Multiple correct answers

If multiple correct answers are supported for the question type, use numeric values separated by a comma.

Example:

  • 1,3

This means Option1 and Option3 are correct.

Do not write the full option text in the Correct Answer column.

Special instructions

Follow these special instructions while preparing the Excel file.

True / False questions

For True / False questions:

  • Fill Option1 with True

  • Fill Option2 with False

  • Leave Option3 and Option4 blank

  • Use 1 as Correct Answer if True is correct

  • Use 2 as Correct Answer if False is correct

Multiple correct answers

For questions with multiple correct answers, write the correct answer numbers separated by commas.

For example:

  • 1,3

This means Option1 and Option3 are correct.

Minimum options

Each question must have at least 2 options.

If your question has only 3 answer choices, you can leave Option4 blank.

Correct Answer must match only the filled options.

For example, if only Option1 and Option2 are filled, Correct Answer should be 1 or 2 only.

Example Excel row

Here is an example of how one question should be written.

  • Question: What is the capital of India?

  • Option1: Mumbai

  • Option2: New Delhi

  • Option3: Jaipur

  • Option4: Kolkata

  • Correct Answer: 2

  • Explanation: New Delhi is the capital of India.

Fix the file and upload it again.

What if imported questions are not showing?

If imported questions are not showing, check these points:

  • The import was completed successfully

  • The questions were imported into the correct quiz or My Question Bank

  • The questions are active, if status is available

  • The quiz has questions added

  • The quiz is active

  • The correct quiz mode is enabled

  • The teacher plan or trial is active

If everything looks correct but questions still do not show, contact Quiz Pathshala support.

Important note

Excel import is useful for adding many standard text-based questions quickly.

For image options, text and image options, code snippet options, or advanced option types, use manual question creation.

Teachers can import questions into their own quizzes and My Question Bank, but they cannot import questions into Global Bank.
